After the defeat of Japan in World War II, the United States led the Allies in the occupation and rehabilitation of theJapanese state. Between 1945 and 1952, the U.S. occupying forces, led by General Douglas A. MacArthur, enacted widespread military, political, economic, and social reforms.

Does the US have to protect Japan?
The Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security Between the United States and Japan was signed in 1954 at the San Francisco Presidio following the signing of the Peace Treaty of San Francisco. The Treaty permitted the United States to establish a military presence in Okinawa to maintain peace in East Asia and to even exert its power against on Japanese domestic quarrels. In return, the United States agrees to help defend Japan against any foreign adversaries.
Was there any other treaty besides the SF Peace Treaty?
A separate treaty, the Treaty of Taipei, formally known as the Sino-Japanese Peace Treaty, was signed in Taipei on April 28, 1952, between Japan and the ROC, just hours before the Treaty of San Francisco also went into effect on April 28.
